  • March 31, 2010; Juan Dolio, Dominican Republic {Photos with Elisa}<br /> I met a very extraordinary five-year old girl today, named Elisa. She lives at the special needs orphanage called La Casa de Luz (The House of Light). She is smart and sassy and extremely independent. Although her limps don't function correctly, she has taught herself how to function, like when she blew bubbles. She uses her leg to hold up her arm which brings the wand close enough to her face so she can blow. She was so proud. I also taught her how to take a photos. She looked through the viewfinder and told me when to press the button. We make a good team, no?

  • March 30, 2010; Juan Dolio, Dominican Republic {Kioskea}<br /> Poverty is a cycle; one that is hard to break. This is Yomilka. She is twenty-three years old, has three kids and is pregnant with her fourth. She has no food or water to give her children so she makes money as a prostitute. By selling herself she continues to get pregnant, which means she needs more money to buy more food for more children. This is the trap that most of these women and children find themselves in. My friend Isabel spent some time with her and prayed for her family. I hope we will get to visit Yomilka again on Thursday...

  • March 29, 2010; Florida, USA {La Duqueza}<br /> In the Dominican, Haitians are pushed to the edges of society and considered worthless. There is a community of them that live and work at the dump outside of Juan Dolio in a place called La Duqueza. It is dangerous for the women because they have to fight for rotten food and second hand clothes and anything else the dump trucks bring them from the other world in order to provide for their families.

  • March 27, 2010; Virginia, USA {The Island of Hispaniola}<br /> This will be my third time going back to Hispaniola I can't wait! I spent two weeks in Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic during college with a group of Inter Varsity students at the Students International Base. And last year I lived in the Haitian town of Terrier Rouge for ten days to help photograph for His Hands for Haiti Child Sponsorship Program. <br /> <br /> This week a group of us are traveling down to a small town outside of Dominican Republic's capital, Santo Domingo. We will be working with SCORE International and Jackie's Orphanage, both whom our students at The Rock have raised money for during our annual New Year's Aid event. I feel privileged to be able to go and see first hand the difference it has made.

  • March 24, 2010; Washington, D.C., USA {Motorcade}<br /> Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu drove by this morning in a motorcade adorned with his countries flag, and ours. We stopped to watch the procession with all of the other groggy work-goers who were pleasantly surprised by their good timing.

  • March 23, 2010; Washington, D.C., USA {Terra Cotta Warriors: Guardians of China's First Emperor}<br /> In 1974 one of the most stunning archaeological finds was discovered; an army of thousands of hand made, life-size, clay figures that had been buried for nearly 2,000 years. These warriors had been created to accompany Qin Shihuangdi, China's first emperor, in the after life. For the first time ever, China has allowed 15 Terra Cotta Figures and other treasures from the uncovered tomb to come to the United States for an exhibit hosted by the National Geographic Museum. 60,000 tickets were sold in advance and people have been constantly streaming in, both day and night, since the doors opened in February. I kind of like walking through the sea of people every morning on my way into work, weaving around walking canes and baby strollers and clusters of students. It reminds me that people are out there who want to know about the world. So we will keep traveling and discovering and digging so we can tell them...

  • March 11, 2010; Virginia, USA {What If}<br /> I had the radio on when I was driving home from dinner. I had just spent two hours talking with Jen and Danielle about how much going to Africa has changed us. Our hearts were broken by what we saw and for some reason pieces were left there. As the songs came through the FM, I started wondering if the whole 'picking up the pieces of your broken heart' remedy were as necessary as the songwriters were saying. What if you are not supposed to pick up the pieces? What if you don't ask for them back? What if God uses your broken pieces to put others together?

  • March 10, 2010; Washington, D.C., USA {Carmen & Shane: Part 1}<br /> Engagement shoot in Georgetown.

  • March 9, 2010; Virginia, USA {Vienna Station}<br /> The small farm community of Ayr Hill, now present day Vienna, welcomed the arrival of the Washington & Old Dominion Railway in 1859 as a response to the competitive shipping port in Baltimore in hopes to reclaim the trade. Due to financial issues, their goal was never fully achieved. In order to survive, they carried mail, products, and passengers to different destinations along the route. The rail line ended in 1968 after over 100 years of service. A single railroad car now sits on its original tracks at the Vienna Station's historic landmark along the W & OD trail as a monument for all who pass by.

  • March 8, 2010; Virginia, USA {VHS}<br /> Kelsey has been waiting to show Walo our family videos. He saw it all: 80's haircuts, country accents, and a lot of fashion don'ts. I realized that one day, I will not only have to explain to my kids why my bangs take up the majority of my head or the intended purpose behind those horrendous shoulder pads, but how we use to watch videos on these big black cassette tapes captured on a single linear track and played back by a videocassette recorder connected by a ton of wires to streamline to the Television set. I will probably laugh and tell them how one day YouTube will be ancient, too...

  • March 5, 2010; Virginia, USA {Manfredis & Herreras}<br /> Tonight was a night to celebrate. Kelsey was home and Walo was in the US. We spent it together around the dinner table; eating mom's home cooking and listening to Luis and Walo and José tell mischievous stories about growing up in Peru. They had us laughing hysterically while holding our sides. Holly circled around our feet, looking for handouts. Balloons were floating through the air as Mattias ran around the kitchen catching them, giggling all the way. Each story spurred on more memories and more laughter until the night ended around mom's chocolate cake and a discussion of tomorrow's plans. After all that waiting and praying, today had arrived.

  • March 3, 2010; Virginia, USA {First Aid}<br /> Donations began to stream in tonight for The Rock Student Ministries' Heart for Haiti event. The students sorted, labeled and packaged up everything; shoes, clothing, medicine, toiletries, and even a stuffed monkey. These packages will meet a small team of us down in the Dominican Republic, where we will distribute them to the Haitian refugees who are in desperate need of supplies.

  • March 2, 2010; Virginia, USA {Now and Then}<br /> I drove by my high school on the way home and noticed the floodlights were on. I had been waiting for the perfect time to photograph this scene and tonight was it. I pulled into the parking lot as the snow was coming down. The field was empty, except for a single runner. It's been years since I ran around that track for cross country practice, sat on those bleaches during homecoming games or sprinted up the field with my lacrosse team. Isn't it strange how quickly our nows become our thens...
