  • May 25, 2010; Virginia, USA {Letters}<br /> I had two letters from my sponsor kids waiting for me when I got home; one from Uganda and one from the Philippines. Each letter exchanged has to be translated and redirected to the right address. It takes weeks, and sometimes months, for the letters to get delivered. I really look forward to hearing from my girls. It lets me know they are doing okay. Their little pictures and handwriting just melt my heart.

  • May 19, 2010; California, USA {Los Angeles}<br /> We stayed in LA for two days with our dear friends, Robert & Ashley. They gave us the grand tour of the city and all of the monumental sites along the way. The best surprise was driving up to the Dunder Mifflin set of The Office, which is five minutes from their house!

  • May 18, 2010; California, USA {Yosemite}<br /> We took US101 out of San Fran, crossing over the Golden Gate Bridge, to get to Yosemite National Park. We spent the rest of the day in the park, marveling at everything around us.

  • May 17, 2010; California, USA {San Francisco}<br /> The San Francisco cable cars are a city icon and the last operational cable car system in the world. After getting pizza in Little Italy and walking around Chinatown, we took the cable cars across the city.

  • May 16, 2010; Washington, USA {Hoh Rain Forest}<br /> The Hoh Rain Forest is located in Olympic National Park and is one of the few temperate rain forests in the U.S. Sitka Spruce and Western Hemlock are two of the main species growing in the forest, as well as trees like this big cedar.

  • May 15, 2010; Washington, USA {Olympic National Park}<br /> So we were on our way to Olympic National Park when we passed a sign for Forks, the key setting for the Twilight series (and home to Bella and Edward)!!! To my surprise, our campsite was 10 miles outside of town. We ended up eating dinner at a burger joint in Forks and my brothers waited patiently while I explored the Twilight stores. That night, we caught the sunset at driftwood-lined Rialto Beach in Port Angeles, which is one of the most popular beaches on the Olympic Peninsula because of its awe-inspiring views of the Pacific Coast. The next morning, we drove down to La Push, which is home to the Quileute Native American tribe (and Jacob). Before heading out of town, we ate breakfast at a local coffee shop in Forks. I was a happy camper!

  • May 14, 2010; Vancouver, Canada {Vancouver}<br /> We took a ferry to Granville Island in the morning to grab lunch at the local market and then made our way downtown to the historic waterfront. We walked along the boardwalk, passing Canada Place and the 2010 Olympic Cauldron, two national icons on the Vancouver skyline.

  • May 13, 2010; Washington, USA {Seattle}<br /> After spending the majority of the last five days in the van, we sat out on the pier for a while taking in the skyline. I've always heard Seattle is habitually overcast, so the sun must have made a special appearance for us, which was most welcomed. It is pretty incredible to think we were on the other side of the country only five short days ago...

  • May 12, 2010; Wyoming, USA {Yellowstone}<br /> We saw it all...buffalo, a grizzly, a white wolf, rams, elk, geysers, heat vents, thermal pools, Old Faithful...It even snowed while we were there!

  • May 11, 2010; South Dakota, USA {Denied}<br /> It took 16 hours of driving to get from Cleveland to Mt. Rushmore. We arrived at 7am and the cloud cover was so dense we could hardly see the road. Even worse, Mt. Rushmore. We grabbed breakfast at a local diner and waited an hour to see if it would clear. It didn't. And we had to hit the road. The ironic part about it is, this was Andy's second attempt to see the monument. I guess some things are just not meant to be. We adapted a saying, though, that has stuck throughout the rest of the trip..."You got Rushmored." I think it explains itself...

  • May 9, 2010; Niagara Falls, Canada {The Last Hoorah} <br /> Today begins the epic road trip across America with my two brothers before our big moves next month. We hit the road at 8am and drove eight hours to Canada. First stop, Niagara Falls! After seeing the American and the Canadian Falls from both sides, we ended the day in Cleveland with my cousin and his girlfriend. They gave us the grand tour of the city and treated us to their favorite Chinese food at King Wah's.

  • May 8, 2010; Virginia, USA {JMU: Some Old, Some New}<br /> It was an early morning as we joined the mob of excited students rushing to their appropriate colleges, with their families tagging behind. After a hilarious commencement speech, we watched Andy and the JMU ISAT Graduating Class of 2010 walk across the stage and receive their diplomas. Andy and his housemates hosted a party in their backyard later that morning. Congratulations, Jolt House, on your recent graduation!<br /> <br /> Back in Northern Virginia, I met up with my JMU housemate and dear friend, Melissa, who lives in Colombia with her husband. She flew in yesterday to visit for a few weeks. In the midst of getting home from Andy's graduation and packing for my trip, we were able to meet up for an hour. We laughed and talked about life, as she filled me in on her time in South America. She is one adventurous lady! As is tradition, this Highrise reunion turned into a mini photo shoot. When I asked her to flash me a Colombian sign right before we left, she held up her wrist, which had tags for the upcoming election. Perfect!

  • May 7, 2010; Virginia, USA {So Proud}<br /> My youngest brother graduates college tomorrow. We took him out to dinner in Historic Staunton to celebrate. So here's to you, Andy, and to your last day as a college student. May the next chapter of your life be even more blessed than the last.

  • May 6, 2010; Virginia, USA {Dragon Soup}<br /> I forgot how to be a kid. I forgot that life doesn't have to be so real all the time. I forgot that there is a freedom in leaving all of the things you have to do inside in order to go outside to play. I forgot that life through the eyes of a child is a vast kingdom ruled by princes and princesses. And that flower petals and sticks and handfuls of dirt make the perfect soup; and that a few dragons make it taste just right. I forgot how to be a kid until I stepped out of my world and into theirs.

  • May 4, 2010; Virginia, USA {Live, Eat, Breath Technology}<br /> This photo goes out to anyone who is connected to a power supply for the majority of your day. After I spent every waking hour transferring files, exporting photos, combining hard drives, downloading software and programming computers, I stood back and looked at my room. There were plugs in every socket and cords strung out like spaghetti, weaving over and under and across everything. That is why this photo was created. Because if I were to sit down to dinner right then, I am afraid this is what I might see...
